There are many things that make The Life Sports a hub for the best badminton coaching in Pune. Perhaps the most salient thing that helps us enjoy that stature is the fact that our training program draws heavy inspiration from some of the greatest badminton players in the country.
Over the years, we’ve seen ace players from India take badminton to unprecedented new heights. India is now a country that harbors players that have won three Olympic medals, players who’ve secured the world no.1 ranking, and players who finally brought home the world championship crown. Some of the players we are going to mention here are household names.
So let’s take a look, in no particular order, at the greatest players from India to have ever graced the badminton court.
1. Pullela Gopichand
Pullela Gopichand is an inspiration to many aspiring badminton players that spend their time at our badminton court in Aundh. He first gained national recognition after winning the national title in 1996. He later went on to win that very same title for the next 4 years in a row. His biggest achievement came in 2001 when he became the second Indian badminton player to secure the All England Crown.
2.Kidambi Srikanth
Srikanth first gained prominence in 2013, when he won his first national title. From there onwards, he never looked back. He is the first Indian badminton player to win a BWF Super Series Title. He did so with the 2014 China Open Crown. He also ranked as the world no.1 in 2018, thus becoming only the second Indian to do so after Saina Nehwal. In 2021, he also became the first Indian male badminton player to win a silver medal at the world badminton championship.
3.Prakash Padukone
Prakash Padukone is considered to be a pioneer when it comes to putting Indian badminton on the global map. Prakash Padukone has done a lot more for Indian badminton than any other player in history by winning the men’s singles gold at the Commonwealth Games of 1978. For this reason, Prakash is rightfully held as the first badminton superstar of India.
4.P.V Sindhu
P.V Sindhu is another name that students at our badminton classes in Pune aspire to one day become like. Bursting onto the scene in 2013, this ace player won the bronze at both the 2013 and 2014 badminton world championship. She then went on to win two silver medals after fighting a back injury. Her career’s defining moment yet came at the 2019 BWF World Championship, where she beat the formidable Okuhara to become the first Indian to win that title.
5.Jwala Gutta
Jwala Gutta is a popular name in the doubles category. With several national and international medals to boast, Jwala is considered a shining star today when it comes to representing India on the global stage. Some of her prominent achievements include winning the gold medal in the doubles category at Delhi’s Commonwealth Games 2010, a bronze medal at the London BWF World Championship 2011, and a silver medal at the 2014 commonwealth games.
6.Aparna Popat
Aparna Popat is known for winning the National Senior Women’s Badminton Title for the highest number of times in history. She is also the first Indian woman to win the French Open title.
7.Saina Nehwal
Saina Nehwal is largely heralded for changing the landscape of Indian badminton forever. Her monumental bronze win at the 2012 London Olympics was the country’s first-ever Olympic medal in badminton. She finally went on to win the gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
