The Perfect Badminton Court- Size, Surface, and Dimensions

Badminton, the fastest racket sport in the world, has undergone great evolution since its inception in 1870 at its birthplace, the beautiful city we call Pune. Badminton is a popular indoor sport that is enjoyed by people of all ages. It is a fast-paced game that requires quick reflexes, agility, and strength. Whether you’re looking to join Badminton classes in Pune or are just curious about the sport, it is important to know the dimensions of the badminton court.

The Proper Surface

A fast-paced game requires an appropriate surface to help athletes manoeuvre quickly and efficiently while minimizing chances of injury. Keeping this in mind, A perfect badminton court comes equipped with standardized flooring in one of three recommended types: Rubber mat, Wooden, or Synthetic.

The surface should be flat, level, and free from any obstruction.

It is also important to keep in mind that you would need to carry appropriate sports shoes before hopping on to play in order to avoid muscle strain. Carrying out a proper stretching routine before and after playing will also help achieve this goal.

The Perfect Badminton Court Size

The dimensions of a badminton court in feet are 44ft long and 20 ft wide. These dimensions are the ones in use while playing a doubles match. For singles matches, the badminton court length remains the same while the width is shortened to 17 ft.

In meters, the measurement of a badminton court is 13.4 meters long and 6.1 meters wide for doubles and 5.18 meters for singles.

The court is marked with lines of different colors to differentiate between the different areas of the court. The outermost lines form the boundary of the court, while the inner lines mark the different areas of play.

The Net

The height of the badminton court is determined by the height of its net. A standardized badminton court is made out of a nylon mesh and supported by a thick nylon cord that runs through white tape. The Net is set at a height of 2 feet and 6 inches from the ground. In metres, the height is 1.55 meters.

The net divides the court into two equal halves, and it should be placed at a height of 5 feet in the center and 5 feet, 1 inch at the poles.

Maintenance

Daily cleaning is required for the maintenance of the badminton flooring, along with periodic polishing. The Nets may get worn out with repeated use. Hence, an investment in good quality nets and their maintenance is worthwhile. Please ensure that proper, clean footwear is in use to ensure longer floor life as well as the prevention of muscle injuries.
