Here are 7 types of gymnastics you should know about

In retrospect, the impression we have of gymnastics is quite narrow. Most people who first enroll in our gymnastics classes in pune at The Life Sports think of it as this incredible display of strength, flexibility, and endurance. For a very long time since its inception, that’s exactly what it was. Today, however, Gymnastics has broadened its scope and features a variety of specializations.

In fact, Gymnastics can officially be categorized into 7 different types of specialities. This article aims to shed light on them all.

So without much further ado, let’s dive deep to get a more in-depth look into each of these 7 different forms of Gymnastics.

I) Rhythmic Gymnastics

Kicking off our list is Rhythmic Gymnastics, which is currently a female-driven sport in the Olympics. It basically involves athletes performing jumps, leaps, tosses, etc., with the help of an apparatus. There are typically five different types of apparatus that gymnasts rely on when indulging in Rhythmic gymnastics. These include balls, hoops, clubs, ribbons, and rope.

II) Tumbling or power tumbling involves athletes performing very complex leaps and twists quickly on a spring runway

This spring runway is bouncier than a typical exercise mat. All tumbling happens on the same strip. Each stage of the competition will have gymnasts performing two passes. Each pass consists of eight elements.

III) Trampoline

Here, gymnasts perform high-flying twists and leaps on a trampoline. Athletes earn points on every successful twist and flip they perform. Trampoline became an Olympic discipline in the year 2000. Currently, the Olympics hosts an individual Trampoline competition for both men and women. The event itself consists of both a compulsory and voluntary round, each rewarding 10 skill points.

IV) Group Gymnastics

As the name suggests, Group Gymnastics alludes to a competition where gymnasts compete together, usually in a team of 6-16 athletes. This group can be all-male, all-female, or mixed.

V) Acrobatic Gymnastics

As a leading gymnastics training center, we can claim that this is perhaps the most physically intensive aspect of Gymnastics. Acrobatic gymnastics is usually performed in groups. It entails balances, holds, and all types of hand-stands performed by gymnasts on each other while other members of the team catch and throw their fellow athletes. The event can be spearheaded by all-male, all-female, or mixed gymnasts.

VI) Men’s Artistic Gymnastics

This is arguably the oldest form of gymnastics and involves men performing stunts that display their strength and flexibility. Men in this type of gymnastics compete with the help of six apparatuses. These include pommel horses, still rings, parallel bars, floor exercises, horizontal bars, and vaults.

VII) Women’s Artistic Gymnastics

This is hands-down the most popular type of gymnastics. It is also the form of gymnastics that attracts the attention of most aspiring female gymnasts. Unlike men’s artistic gymnasts, Women athletes perform their feat using 4 apparatuses. These include uneven bars, vaults, floor exercises, and balance beams.

Conclusion

As you can see, Gymnastics has many more aspects than sheer acrobatics. This also broadens the scope for aspiring gymnasts who wish to make it big in this field.
